Spiritual. Moral, Social and Cultural Values at St John's

"Pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding " - SIAMS Report

At Knaresborough St John’s C of E Primary School we value the diverse ethnic backgrounds of all pupils and families and undertake a variety of events and lessons to celebrate these. We have found this approach to be enriching for all parties as it teaches tolerance and respect for the differences in our community and the wider world. Underpinning all of this are a broad range of curriculum topics which have strong links to our British values through spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

All of our pupils learn  about Britain through different periods of history in their topic and theme work.  Every child takes a role with supporting The British Legion’s Poppy Day.  Our children purchase poppies and hold two minute's silence in our Remembrance Day service which is held at as part of a whole school time of collective worship.  The Headteacher leads this service and is supported by readings from other members of staff and our foundation governor.  The children then share the work they have focused on which then goes onto display in the main school corridor.

We are a Church of England school and we take great pride in our Christian values.  We work closely with the local church to ensure that respect, caring, belonging and forgiving are at the centre of our daily life.  Our daily collective worship times provide the children with an opportunity to reflect on their thoughts and feelings through thought provoking themes.  Our children take a lead within our worship times by offering their own prayers.  Democracy within the school is extended beyond the school curriculum through our School Council and Eco Council.  Both groups represent their classes and discuss and debate the issues that are of importance before making a decision and leading any necessary change.   The school also participates in events, such as supporting the local community with our annual Harvest Festival.  We believe that SMSC is of vital importance in providing the most effective environment for our children in preparing them to play a positive and worthwhile role within modern Britain.
